I may sound like a broken record, but until I have established my own style, outfit formulas, and knowledge of what works for me and what doesn’t, I will continue to emulate Audrey @ Putting Me Together. Her style is so much of what I love, and I love how her “style” posts aren’t just “Hey, I went and bought this dress and now I’m wearing it on my style blog, so if you want to look like me go buy this dress.” That’s what I always assumed style blogs were. And, of course, Audrey is introducing new things all the time, but she shows how to wear things multiple ways, and which items are “one-hit wonders”, meaning they really can only be worn one way or with one color, and which items will connect your closet and together and create a truly mix-and-match wardrobe.
After stalking her blog heavily, I created a running list on my iPad Notes of wardrobe pieces that I eventually want to add. And I realized after I looked at it, that most of my items had one thing in common — neutrals. I didn’t realize until that moment how much my closet was lacking neutrals. Black dress pants, a good denim skirt, a black straight skirt, a neutral cardigan, a nice white top, beige flats, etc. They may sound boring lined up like that, but they are truly essentials. Once you have those, you can turn those bright tops, yellow flats, and patterned skirts into outfits! But when everything in your closet is a one-hit wonder, you can be stuck staring at an overflowing closet with truly “nothing to wear!”
That’s where I was. My shopping formula was: Go shopping, look on clearance racks, pull off anything cute, try it on, and then pick what I could afford out of what fit. I really had no concept of buying items with a purpose. I ended up with a mis-matched wardrobe full of things I really didn’t like, didn’t go together, and often didn’t fit well (#petiteprobs).
Since reading Audrey’s blog, I have added a black and white striped tee, beige flats, black dress pants, neutral sandals, a black straight skirt, a denim skirt, a gray jacket, a beige purse, a good denim jacket, and a statement necklace to my wardrobe. Most were on sale/clearance/thrifted or I had a coupon or promo code, so I didn’t spend more than I normally would on clothes, but it has opened up my closet like I wouldn’t believe. I’m still learning, purging, and adding things to my shopping list, but I enjoy putting together outfits now!
And my newest addition:
A beige cardigan. Could anything sound more boring? Probably not, but I’m so excited about adding this to outfits where I wanted another layer but none of my brightly colored or patterned sweaters/jackets would work!
Neutrals are my friend.
Happy Wednesday, dears.
Here’s the exact same picture (#lazy) that was on the blog yesterday, with the cardigan in action! I better like that cardigan, because it will be on my passport for the next 10 years …
